After my fourth child was born, my immune system went
haywire. I eventually ended up with an environmental allergist.
Immune system reactions can mimic
all sorts of medical conditions. I was reactive
to every food tested (21) and most chemicals. I had digestive and
nervous system symptoms including
depression, confusion, slurred speech, inner ear imbalance,
sobbing episodes, instant sore throat, and intestinal swelling. As you
say, it is helpful to
know "I'm not crazy" when they provoked a crying jag
in the clinic with histimine.
The desensitization allowed me to eat most foods again
but there are still some foods I must be carefull with, especially peanuts.
Most of the chemical
reactions are under control but I still had a perfume
reaction that was a major interference in my life. I could not go
to women's meetings and had to
leave church frequently because other people seem to
think that perfume needs to be a part of their life.
Usually I avoid medication for fear of reacting to it
but last year I found an over the counter histamine blocker that worked
for the perfume reaction.
So, after 16 years I can be with people again!
My sister-in-law is an occupational therapist. She
has fibromyalgia and says it is difficult to get enough exercise without
getting too much.
